Acne: a VERY common condition

Struggling with acne? You’re not alone. Acne is VERY common! This skin condition affects ~85% of people between the age of 12-24 years of age; BUT it is not just a condition of teenagers, as 26% of women and 12% of men continue to experience in their 40’s. Acne is an inflammatory skin condition that results in whiteheads, blackheads, pimples, and/or cysts that commonly occur on the face, back, shoulders, and chest.

What causes acne?

What can make acne persistent is it is often caused by a variety of factors including mom and dad (genetics), oil glands and sebum production, normal bacteria that are present on the skin (known as  P. acnes), hormones (why we get it starting puberty), and clogged pores (the start of blackheads and whiteheads).

These days, ’maskne’ is a new term that has been coined for the year 2020. As many are doing their part to protect others and prevent the spread of COVID-19, our skin is the one who suffers. A combination of occlusion/friction from masks, a moist and humid environment, sebum & sweat production and many other factors play a role in the formation of acne. Therefore, taking care of our skin is more important than ever.

But does what I eat affect my acne?

Well, the simple answer is it is controversial. It is thought that foods with high glycemic indexes (for example - white rice, white bread, and potatoes) and possibly skim milk can potentially be linked to acne prevalence.

Do I have to just have to live with my acne if there is no "cure"?
