RejuvaDERM Tips: Managing Oily Skin

Excessively oily skin in a condition where an excess of sebum (a mixture of fat-like molecules, waxes and esters) is produced by the skin. Much like dry skin, oily skin can become uncomfortable and frustrating to manage. We recommend visiting RejuvaDERM for a tailored treatment plan  but here are some common tips to help manage oily skin:

  1. Maintain integral skin moisture. A common response to having oily skin is to stop the use of any moisturizing products. The thought of avoiding more moisture into an already oily skin is a common misconception.. While it is important to select the appropriate product for your skin, not adding hydration to the skin can comprise the skin’s moisture barrier and actually cause a response in the skin to start producing additional sebum. There are many lightweight oil-absorbing moisturizers on the market.. Pro tip: apply oil control lotion in the areas you get oily and opt for your normal lotion on dry/normal areas of the face.
  2. Find a skincare routine that works for you. An oily skin type can be caused by hormones or diet but it is often hereditary and hard to change completely with lifestyle changes. Oily skin is a condition that needs to be managed through an appropriate skincare routine. A comprehensive skincare routine that you can stick to is an easy way to manage oily. 3. Wear oil-free, non-comedogenic, water-based makeup. Oily skin is often prone to becoming clogged so choosing makeup that allows your skin to “breathe” during the day will prevent further congestion. "Non-comedogenic" means these products do not plug or clog your pores.
  4. Exfoliate with chemical peels or facials. Oily skin can often become congested because of the overproduction of sebum. Many people with oily skin can experience blackheads, whiteheads or acne due to this overproduction. We recommend patients with oily skin visit us for a consultation and inquire about our chemical peels, silk peels and hydrafacials. The peel and treatments are  an all in one treatment that encourage cell turnover and help manage oily skin and the effects of oily skin such as large pores.
  5. Add a vitamin A cream to your skincare routine: adding a vitamin A cream, also known as a retinol or retinoid, will help with oily skin immediately and overtime. Retinols and retinoids are widely talked about and for good reason! These vitamin A creams work by shrinking oil glands in a process known as atrophy, therefore reducing oil production and oily skin!
