Photodynamic Therapy, also known as PDT, is a procedure that treats a combination of changes in facial skin, as well as significant sun damage. It is especially helpful for achieving a wide range of facial rejuvenation, including removing pre-cancerous spots (actinic keratosis), helping treat acne, eliminating irregular pigmentation and improving skin texture – especially reducing pore size. The treatment is FDA approved for pre-cancerous spots (actinic keratosis) and so the procedure itself is covered for patients by the Alberta government for this indication. There is a cost for the topical Levulan® medications and some private insurance plans cover the cost of this as well.
How Does Photodynamic Therapy Work? Photodynamic skin rejuvenation utilizes intense pulsed light in combination with Levulan®, also known as aminolevulinic acid (ALA). Levulan® is applied topically to the whole area to be treated. The Levulan® is left on the skin to “incubate” and then activated with the appropriate light source. Levulan® is a photosensitizer that is taken up by rapidly dividing cells.
What Should I Expect with Treatment? The procedure is performed in the office and causes minimal discomfort. Following the treatment, one can expect the skin to look mildly red or even sunburned. This redness can last for a few days. The skin should be protected from the sun for 48 hours after treatment. The skin improves with a more even tone, smaller pore size, smoother texture, and a more youthful rejuvenated look. Patients will also notice a reduction in overall sun damage, as well as pre-cancerous lesions, and potential early skin cancer changes. |
