Chemical Peels

At Rejuvaderm, we offer various professional medical-grade Chemical Peel treatments to help treat mild acne, sun damage, premature aging, correct skin pigmentation, and revitalize the skin. Chemical Peels improve and smooth the texture of the skin by loosening the dead outer layer of the skin, causing it to peel off. Some also stimulate collagen production in the cells underneath. These treatments can improve your complexion and help restore a more youthful look. Generally a series of Chemical Peels is performed. Chemical Peels in conjunction with professional skin care products are an excellent way to maintain the results of other cosmetic procedures. The Chemical Peels used in Dr. Malcolm’s office are available only in Dermatologist and Plastic Surgeon offices and high-end medical spas.

Dr. Malcolm and her nurse currently use two different professional Chemical Peel lines:

  • SkinCeuticals: Glycolic acid, Lactic acid, and Salicyclic acid peels. These Chemical Peels are the newest peels available in Canadian Dermatologist offices since February 2011
  • SkinMedica: Illuminize, Vitalize, Rejuvenize peels. This Chemical Peel line is very popular in Dermatologist offices in the United States. Retinoic acid is sometimes added to the Vitalize peel to increase the depth of penetration

These Chemical Peels consist of various acids of different strengths, designed to produce various degrees of exfoliation based on each patient’s individual needs.

How are Chemical Peels Performed?

Chemical peels are performed in our clinic. After protecting the hair and the eyes, the skin is thoroughly cleansed with an agent that removes excess oils. One or more exfoliating solutions are applied to the facial area and left on for a specified length of time before being washed off. These exfoliating solutions are used to regenerate new skin by peeling off damaged, wrinkled or dry skin.

How Long Does the Procedure Take?

The entire treatment takes approximately 30 minutes.

What Should I Expect During the Treatment?

During the procedure, most patients experience a warm sensation, sometimes followed by a stinging sensation. Cool air and cool compresses may be applied to help alleviate this stinging.

What Should I Expect After?

Depending upon the type of chemical peel, your face may appear slightly red (flushed), or possibly look like a mild windburn or a mild sunburn. Again, the type of Chemical Peel applied will determine the degree of peeling.

How Many Treatments Will I Need?

This will vary depending on the individual and the goal to be achieved. Most patients start with a series of 3 Chemical Peels.

How Do I Decide Which Chemical Peel is Best for Me?

Dr. Malcolm and her dermatology nurse will discuss with you the various Chemical Peel treatment options available depending upon the condition of your skin and the goals of treatment. It is important to avoid over-exposure to the sun after a Chemical Peel since the new skin is fragile and more susceptible to sunburn.
